70's Fashion Memories

It is almost amusing to some of us who are old enough to remember the decade, that 70's fashions and clothing are popular again among some younger members of society.  What caught my attention was the large number of people looking for 70's fancy dress outfits around Halloween. The decade was a time of unbelievable change in America and a by-product of that change was the clothing worn by young people.

If you have never taken any time to fully appreciate the changes that went on in the fashion world during the 1970s, you can give yourself a quick tutorial by watching some of the television shows of the time. The differences in clothing styles from the early 70s to the mid 70s and then finally the late 70s were pretty pronounced.

At the start of the decade, the whole hippie look was still holding its influence on society. The decade started just one year removed from Woodstock and those peace and love outfits were still being worn by many of the younger generation, who today could be grandparents. A wild mix of fashions all went together in an unusual mix that some people today are finding attractive again.

During the middle of the decade, some changes started to take place. It was not always a comfortable time for those of us who lived through it as youngsters. Spending half an hour watching The Brady Bunch might give you some understanding of what we went through. Children were often forced to wear Bobby Brady style clothing at the insistence of their mothers who really thought they were doing the right thing. Little boys were dragged into department stores and forced into ghastly colored jeans called Toughskins.

The decade ended with another interesting fashion twist. Disco. Disco outfits were, to say the least, a bit different than what most people of the time were used to seeing or wearing. Shiny and revealing, they looked good under a disco ball. That is essentially what they were made for, so there is nothing much else to say.
